Who we are

Lekdanling is the London home of the Dzogchen Community, a community of spiritual practitioners following the teachings of the Tibetan Dzogchen Master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu.

“Dzogchen”, or “Total Perfection”, is an ancient spiritual teaching developed in Tibet within the Buddhist and Bön traditions. However, Dzogchen itself is not a religion or a system of beliefs. The word “dzogchen” refers to the primordial state of enlightenment inherent in all sentient beings, a state of non-duality unaffected by the limitations of the mind. The ability to experientially discover this state of total equanimity within oneself, and the ability to abide in it free from the limitations of dualistic perception, represent the ultimate goal of the Dzogchen Teachings and the achievement of total liberation on an individual level.

Lekdanling also hosts activities and events promoted by the International Shang Shung Institute, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan culture. The Institute was founded in 1989 by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu and inaugurated in 1990 by H.H. the Dalai Lama. From 1962 to 1992 Chögyal Namkhai Norbu was Professor of Tibetan and Mongolian Language and Literature at the University of Naples L’Orientale, where he dedicated himself to research into Tibetan history. He has published numerous academic works, particularly on the origins of Tibetan culture and the ancient kingdom of Shang Shung.
